Default Inaccurate Speedo......

Hey guys, 77 FXE. My Speedo is so far off. When it says 70 i'm actually doing 54... and the faster I go the more it's off..... Its cable drivin off of the front wheel. I've checked the service manual and parts manual for different setups. The only drive gear listed is a 23 tooth drive. They don't list any others so I'm figuring that that is common to both models.... So the only other thing I can think is that the speedo which is not original for the FXE is not a correct match for the drive... I believe I have an FLH setup (Tanks and speedo) and the bike ix an FXE by the vin... I don't believe the front end is OEM as well so it's very possible that it's all been kinda of Bastardized.... Maybe its possible I have an aftermarket drive, I won't know till I get it off and apart... Are there conversions out there that have different ratio's in the drive that can get me close to actual?... Thanx

Every shovel speedo I've ever had that worked has been off to some degree. You probably have an aftermarket speedo or drive with the wrong ratio, that'll read crazy off like yours

Do you have a 19" front wheel? Maybe having a 21" would throw it off?

It has a 21" wheel on it but wouldn't that make it read slower?

The wrong size wheel will not make be more off at faster speeds...the drive on the front wheel and the speedo are different ratios.

Seems like someone at some point converted your bike to a front wheel drive system. In 77 they were still running the drive off the transmission. The front wheel drive, 2240:60 ratio, was first used for 1981-1984 FLH models and 1984-1986 FXWG models.

Your post indicates that you are not running the small FXE style gauges but the larger FLH style type. I think the answer is that your speedo needs to be the 2240:60 in order to get the correct speedometer reading.

That is correct.. I'm running the FLH Speedo... But still the service Manual indicates the same drive for an FLH or FXE... I'll check my tranny tonight...

FXE from 74-84 used the front wheel speedo drive...part number 67127-73...not transmission driven...2:1 ratio...he probably does have a 2240:60 speedo, thus the mismatch...you need to remove the speedometer and check the back for the ratio...then make sure your drive on the wheel matches it..changing the drive on the front wheel will be the cheapest way out.

I had the dash of once and saw a sticker on the Speedo head that said something about when at 2000 rpm. I'll check the bottom of it as well to see what ratio it requires. Other than JP cycles, any other suppliers of drives?
