you don't set the timing static on TDC

it is set at the advance mark on the flywheels

using a steel ruler in the front plug hole from the tdc of the ruler ( rock the engine back and forth to get the spot ) back the engine up 11/16 of an inch that is the correct spot to set the static timing

Great!! I presume this dimension changes with the stroke, as with one full revolution of the crank, a stroked motor will have a greater displacement, am I off base here?

no your not but a stroked street size engine ends up around the same place at 11/16 - but the timing is 32 degrees instead of 36 degrees

this will give you a starting point for end tuning

Awesome. Thanks a bunch!! makes sense that the displacement for that advance position would stay the same but the flywheel angle would change.

Update 4/28:
I got the old girl to sing to me and proper compression test read at ~85 psi for both front and rear.
I talked to my old man, he thinks he put low compression pistons in the bike.

.028 jet is on the small side for that size engine, bump it up to .029 or even .031, shovels like it a bit fatter. B cam isn't known for being kicker friendly either. @ 85psi a hole I'm thinking a well run 8-1 compression motor so the low comp pistons sound right. Truett & Osborn wheel will not have any markings you can see except the timing marks. John's advice on backing off the timing is spot on.

EXCELLENT!

I've gone ahead and dialed back the timing. Thanks for the confirmation on the compression and i'll get myself a set of jets to play with.

Cheers

One hint... with a Bendix I always turn the idle Up at least a half turn to Kick-start..
If the idle is set Normal to Low... thay start much harder..
Mine do anyway..
Same with S&S carb... others???? IDK
