Default Battery Drain

Installed a Shorai Lithium battery a few months back, and along with the new All ***** high torque starter, the motor spun like a top when I hit the starter button.

Now the battery is losing charge overnight, not enough to even make the solenoid engage.

Back to the kick starter again.

No issue starting up immediately after a run, the charging system is working.

Have the Johnjz wiring setup to avoid starter over run.

Nothing has changed since the install, and the key is definitely off.

What's draining the battery?

The Shorai Lithium battery is funny about charging...your stock shovel setup might not even charge it correctly ...especially if the voltage falls below 12.86 volts...below that voltage it needs a special charger

Have you read all the instructions to that battery?

The battery has been working fine for a few months. The only thing that has changed is that summer is approaching in Houston.

Went for a spin yesterday, stopped for gas twice and later a watering hole to watch the Rockets go down in flames to the Warriors, bike started right up.

But overnight it lost its charge.

Maybe I need to disconnect the ground cable after the next run to start tracing the problem.

Step 1 - is the battery going dead all by itself

remove the regulator hot wire and see what happens over night < it could be the diode went bad and it will stay on like a trunk light

I have a Shorai Lithium on my original Ironhead with no parasitic drain....never had to charge it except to bring it to full capacity out of the box

.I use a Lithium charger like this....
http://www.dkcustomproducts.com/lith...-dk-ag-471.htm

Battery should hold charge for about a year without parasitic drain. I would just keep it on the charger while you figure out what is draining your battery. Do you have any installed aftermarket electronics or something connected directly to your battery?

I also had a Lithium in my 2011 but that one had drain from an alarm system and smart siren so always had it on a charger if I did not ride for a period of time.

I have a problem that just doesn’t make any sense, so I decided to share it with the world. (Why should I suffer this brain damage alone?) I have a custom build show bike that I am tweaking to ride on the street, so I had to go around and resolve all the little issues that the builder, who never intended to ride it felt were unnecessary at the time he built the bike. I am almost done with my torque wrench, additives, videos, and manuals, but there is a problem that just doesn’t figure! This shovelhead came with a ton of receipts to prove that all the parts had either been rebuilt, customized, or new, and that is consistent with what I have seen so far. But there was a noticeable problem with the starter working intermittently. So, the last time I tried to start it, a strange whirling sound came for the area of the solenoid area, died down, and then nothing, and even with the ignition switch in the off position, the battery and positive lead heated up to the point were steam was coming out of a sealed battery, which I promptly disconnected, and it wouldn’t take a charge after that, pretty scary! I thought it was either a defective solenoid or that the relay contacts had welded keeping the circuit closed, so I replaced the solenoid with a brand new Accel unit, inspected the relay (Which still appears to also be brand new.), and replaced the battery. I am compulsively detailed person and studied the wiring schematic, called the man who professionally wired the bike, and retraced my steps, to no avail. So, if there are any old times out there that could help it will save my sanity!

Thank you!

why not disconect the battery overnight and see if it starts the next day .that will tell if its a faulty battery

Just to put a bow on my original post in this thread, the drain on the battery was caused by the oil reservoir support bracket under the right side of the reservoir making contact with the terminal on the starter.

I have an All ***** starter in place of the original, and the placement of the starter has the terminal connection just beneath the reservoir bracket, which had cut through the rubber boot on the starter terminal.

The determination came when I hopped on after a pit stop, turned the key on and smoke started wafting out from behind the battery.

Ground the bottom edge of the bracket to remove about 1/4 inch for clearance and haven't had an issue since.

I think is why some remove the Ford style solenoid and replace with the square cube relay.... Lot's more room....
