Default help with billet 41MM tree set - pics

still foolin with the 41MM front end on my 78 FX - I noticed there was no "cog nut" or inner nut on the stem of this aftermarket tree set - however - the top tree has an indent that matches the cog nut perfectly and I believe this set was supposed to be used with an inner nut like the stock 41MM tree set - this is not a hidden stem nut tree set - so it has a top nut - anyone set this type of aftermarlet billet tree set before? I'm gonna use the inner nut - I can tell you this - when I took it off the neck - that top nut was pretty loose - pretty dangerous if you ask me

That eggcorn nut's not stock. So someone screwed with that tree before you and didn't toque it up.

yes - I'm pretty sure it was also missing the inner cog nut - without the inner cog nut you cant torque it down or it will bind - there is not pinch nut on the top tree like narrowglide trees have either so I'm pretty sure I'll use the cog nut when I reassemble this set - this stinkin bike was built by a custom shop in Owatanna MN - they charged the guy 1200 bucks for that front end and then installed it wrong so he would die with the top nut rolled off on the highway

Not really, the fork nuts and pinch bolts would hold it together. You'd notice it came off when that nut hit you in your nuts.

you might be right - a while back - a dude was making brass risers and sellin them on ChopCult - well - those risers cracked when you got to highway speeds and several dudes were goin 70 MPH with their handlebars in their hands with no way to steer the bike - one guy was lucky and rolled the bike into a field and dumped it - other were not so lucky - whenever I make one off parts I think about this

Well you never use brass where there's excessive force or pressure.
