Default Flywheel timing marks

Hey guys,I installed an Ultima electronic ignition in the 72 shovel head. Instructions say to bring the front cylinder up on top dead center and align the timing mark in the hole. There are two timing marks on the fly wheel, a line and a dot. My factory manual says the line is 35° advance. The instructions say to rotate the module in the cam cover counter clockwise and then rotate the engine until the LED light comes on and the timing mark is visible in the hole. then, rotate the module clockwise until the light just turns off, and the motor should be static timed. I can’t do this with the line: the light won’t turn off. I tried rotating the engine 180 degrees just in case it was on exhaust stroke. . No luck. The bike backfires and sputters. So I’m using the dot, but it’s not working.

Do you own a manual for that bike? there could be more than two marks. Pull the plugs and try again...

Thanks for posting that. Yes, I have a factory manual. I didn’t see that exact picture. I’ll flip to 3-21 when I go out. So I’m good. Must be a carb problem. I also buggered up the crankcase breather and plugged it. That might cause backfires, fouled plugs and tapped block leaks. Going out to fix that right now.

Make sure you are on the compression stroke when you do it, don't use the dot.
