hi. i have smoke after a short ignition fail and over heating. have done a leakage check and both cylinders have leakage from both exhaust and inlet valves. would adjusting the pushrods adjust the valves ? thanks steve
HI guys. Steve from England. have recently purchased a 1977 flh shovelhead, with s&s 93ci sh motor. I'll try and add a picture.
Im looking for some advice please. Whilst riding home from purchase she broke down. Over heated , back fired and smoked pretty badly. When i pulled over, she wouldnt turn off. I found an ignition lead had worked loose. Was taken home by recovery vehicle. On further inspection i found also that the accelorator pump jet was blocked. Having sorting both, she is now smoking badly. I have done a leakdown test. its at 70% loss on both cyclinders, adding oil to cyclinders makes no differance. i can hear air from both exhaust and carb. Would adjusting pushrods adjust the valves to cure this ?
thanks
Nice looking custojm you have there. As Racepress suugested probably won't cure it but definitely worth the effort.
Suprising somehthing that clean llooking would turn out to be such a quick problem though. Considered asking the prior owner for some input?
And just a question. Is there a carb support bracket hold the carb in place? If not, and with that rigid frame you will never get a complete and proper seal on the intake manifold between the heads and the carb.

I don't see any support worthwhile... best get at minimum the S&S case bolt one...
Better get rid of that Cheezy inline fuel filter as well, or you won't be Happy with your tuning efforts..
Do Not put any oil into it... especially if it is smoking...I suspect someone checked the oil after sittig and now the poor old girl is Desperately trying to clear her throat... May even need to let some out!!!!!

if that does not work if your not mechanically inclined I hope you got a good deal on it -
if that does not work you will need to remove the top end of the engine -
do not run it long thinking it will some how fix its self you are just opening the cash register more
if it were not smoking bad I could be on board with a valve adjustment - but one never knows do it let us know
if you decide to do the job the guys on this site are very helpful and will guide you in the correct direction the entire time -- its not that big of a deal to do - hand wrenches and the factory books will get you to the end --
