I just bought an '82 fxe with an S&S Super B carb, K&N filter and Milwaukee Twin Shorty Duals, otherwise dead-stock.
Can someone recommend the range of jets I should order for Operation at 5000 - 10,000 feet elevations? I live in Boulder CO & will be riding it in the higher mountains. The bike's jetted for sea level ops now.
start with a .295-.31 pilot, and a.68-.70 main, see how she runs, do a plug reading after a good freeway run. if it seems to run good, watch your fuel milage if its around 35 to 40 mpg your pilot is going to be about right. if you are sneezing through the carb. you may need to go a little richer on the pilot. if your plugs are very darkgosmaller on the main. The jet sizes that S&S suggests are always on the rich side.
I installed the jets you recommended & she runs great & the plugs look about right. I'm getting almost 60 MPG though. Is there something wrong? Seems like that's what I used to get with my '80 FXE with the identical carb.
60 MPG is impossible, you do realize that when you fill up, there are 2 tanks to fill?? something is wrong with your calculations, or you just filled one tank and did the math with only 2 1/2 gallons......
If it's running good and the plugs look fine, you should be good to go. if you will be going to lower alt. on occ.you may want to up the pilot a size. 60 mpg? haven't seen that yet.
Hey, YOU do the math, my man. 108 miles, 1.82 gallons = 59.340659 MPG. I just did similar milage again today. Sorry to bust yer bubble, but that's what I'm getting. Plugs look just right too. Also, the '82 FXE's only haveONE tank. Best milage to date is 65.464261. 98 mi/1.497 gal. Boulder/Estes Park/Boulder.
Properly jetted at alt. yeah, it could do it! I'm getting 52 on my old pan with a super "B" at sea level. I still think the "B" is the best carb. S&S ever made. (lots of fuel wasted with an accl. pump)
