Stock primary for '69 was the aluminum one with no derby cover. Kind of a pain because of all you have to do to take it off to do anything with the clutch.

Correct are the Goodyear Speed Grip with double thin white walls. I had the Shinko version on my '70, stay far away unless you never plan on going over 45 MPH. Took them off a couple of months ago, went to a modern Dunlop with skinny white wall, close enough and ride 1000% better then he Shinkos. If you want to build a real trailer queen, Speed Grips are out there 50 years old, but the hold air enough for the trailer. Good luck.

This bike is driven a lot...will go with the best handling tires. I do like Dunlops...want to get the best ride out of this machine.

Dunlops with the skinny white wall look year appropriate at 10'. I think the wide white walls look goofy, my opinion.

I have Dunlops (black) on my 71 but I had the original Goodyears on my other bike and that was one of the first things I changed....rubber does not last forever. okay if you have a show bike but if you plan to ride...safety first.

Here is an article on the matter...on a motorcyle safety is compromised even more.

There are new tires with the vintage look like Avon Speedmaster MKII

Great looking bike btw

The term pan shovel is a common name for 66-69 shovel and has been used on the east coast since the 70's. The term come from in 1966 HD took the 65 panhead motor and put new top end (shovel head) on it, advertising it as "power pack heads". 1966 to 1969 HD big v-twin has more names then any other HD big twin.
Pan shovel, 65 panhead motor w/shovelheads.
Generator shovel, generator charging system.
Genny shovel, same as above.
Flat side shovel, flat right gear cover.
Kidney shovel, right gear cover shaped like a kidney.

Up to about 10 yrs ago, not tomany new bikers knew about the 66-69 genny's. They thought all shovelheads were the cone shovels. Up till then you could of bought an all original running genny for $6-7k. Since then they are the only big twin HD that has increased in resale value, ranging from $11-18k.
One more piece of advice, a good motor a lone w/title from a genny will bring atleast $5k. Reason is, 69 was the last yr HD had the vin # only on the motor, no vin # on the frame, the title goes with the motor,1970 and later the title goes w/the frame.

Yep, a real pia, especially if you have dual exhaust. Another common change was the oil tank, 66-69 didn't have a fill hole on the left side. In order to check or ad oil you have to raise the seat.
