Default Transmission Question

Put a new main drive gear bearing race in a transmission case I am building for a 3+R setup. Once I got the race in it needed some sizing in order to get the main drive gear and roller bearings (44 off them) to fit properly.

In order to ensure to ensure it was true, I had to install the mainshaft bearing and bearing housing into the opposite end of the case (needed in order to use the tool)

Parts I am referring to:

#9020 (mainshaft bearing) and #35100-36 (mainshaft bearing housing)

In order to get the housing in it was necessary to heat the case around the opening (no biggie but doesn't seem that I recall having needed to do that before). To get the bearing in took some serious blows from the Harley hammer.

Got the high gear honed properly...all good.

To get the the mainshaft bearing and housing out howver took a lot of pounding with the hammer and runied the bearing.

To the question at hand...what should the fitment be - bearing to the housing AND what should the fitment be - housing to the case.? Cuz at this point is is way to tight.

Not sure what I would have done or needed to do (without screwing up the mainshaft) if the components had all been assembled and I was disassembling the mainshaft from the box (those parts are removed as one)

well your not going to like my answer

we support the inside of the case with a tool ( pipe machined to fit flat using the case machined area on the inside ) we heat the case to 250 degrees before trying to ( use a stand up press ) to install it the race - and depending on the cases size we might freeze the race Note jims races are all over the place in sizing inside and out side - your case might need one as it has more meat to play with

this is the part you wont like - we see them come in like you have they never tell us what they did ( the truth ) but cold pressing and not 250 degrees - then hitting the case bends the end and the race is no longer straight to the main bearing -

and we have the tooling to straighten it but you will end up with a over size roller set and not the std 9020 set - the rollers are available to .002 over and they usually come in at around .001 when it done like that -

John not sure if we are on the same page here. I replaced the high speed race on the left side of the tranny case, added a new Andrews high speed gear and standard size roller bearings. When I did that I needed to size the race with the high speed gear and loose roller bearings.

The right side for the mainshaft uses a sealed roller bearing (9020) and bearing housing (35100-36). The parts are noted in the pic I added. I used a bearing lap tool (96710-40) to ensure I was getting a straight alignment. The bearing lap tool requires the bearing support and housing be installed. After using the tool the high speed gear and rollers function smoothly in the left side (no binding). In theory the mainshaft should now be properly aligned left to right when I install it and the gears. To check that I need to add the bearing housing and bearing

The right side bearing and housing were the parts that took a lot of banging to remove. The bearing housing is from Jims; the bearing from Japan.

Anyhow, from what you are saying it seems as if the inner and outer dimension of Jims bearing housing is not uniform. So that is my question. How tight a fit for the housing in the right side of the case and how tight a fit for the bearing to the bearing housing.

Specifically the parts and fitment I am referring to...

Bearing housing to case

Bearing to bearing housing...

i misread your post completely - I apologize been a long day today and brain tired

the bearing housing is usually not very tight in the case maybe .0005 tenths the bearing to the bearing housing can be .001 tight but if its not and loose we red loc tite it

I put the bearing and the housing between the vise jaws and press together then mainshaft gear then the bearing with the housing then lock and nut with blue

if the housing is too tight going into the case you can damage the main ball bearing - I have also seen them cracked to the screw holes
