I need to contend with a trans leak in my ‘77 4 speed. While everything is apart I was considering installing one of those super nuts. Q—will that type of nut interfere with the clutch hub placement on the shaft? I have an OEM clutch hub on the bike.
Regarding the leak, when I look under the bike with a mirror and flashlight, the tranny case behind the sprocket looks dry but there is oil dripping onto the front of the sprocket and chain. As such, I am suspecting that the small seal on the end of fourth gear might have come loose. The studs are also dry and clean.
the mainshaft its self and the hi gear bushing are in play - the bushing material is tough and it wears the steel out of round inside the shaft its self - the bushing also wears funny
And... About half the time...the sprocket nut is loose enough to allow a leak.. If so... new Parts are mandatory... Not just a Nut.
Certainly...in most cases a new sprocket spacer is required..
This is extremely frustrating because I had the transmission completely rebuilt , even a new mainshaft, seals, spacer, etc. by a highly qualified and well respected Harley mechanic. It was fine for 1200 miles and suddenly a significant leak appeared. I'm about to to dismantle everything AGAIN to get a look at where the leak is coming from.
when they do come loose the hi gear spud gets waffled on its splines just like the gear and will come loose again very soon

What John just said is... if the nut was originally loose, and the high gear "spud" is not replaced... it will leak soon after rebuild..
All Speculation here ya Know... not laying this on your Wrench in any way!!!

You sure it's the sprocket leaking ? Had one that was seeping oil out around the threads on one of the mount studs, chased my tail for a week finding that one. Also the hole the counter shaft goes in can seep and look like the sprocket is bleeding, I clean that and seal it with a smear of good gasket grade RTV silicone like Ultra gray or the black. lastly I've had the tiny seal walk out a few times on fresh rebuilds.

Good luck in the hunt.

I have seen the 5th stud leak as well...I know they are originally "blind" but... all of them are not, as some folks have run too long a Bolt into them...
