Default 1980 FLH ignition system wiring

Hi all,

I’m helping my father with a total rebuild of his 1980 FLH and I’m needing some help with the ignition system wiring. I’ve referenced a few wiring diagrams and it seems that his bike is a cross between 1979 and 1980. All the 80 schematics show it with an electronic ignition rather than the stock points that it has. The schematics for the 79 model ran points, but shows a different starter relay than the 80.

I apologize for my ignorance, but can someone explain how the points is wired to the coil, and how the starter relay and starter should be wired?

many of the first ignitions were garbage some still work don't know how but they do

points one wire goes from a key on term 12 volts on your ignition switch -- to your coil if it has a plus term that one if not it does not matter

the other side of the coil is the wire from the points - its only a 2 wire system with points

you talked about the starter relay a few different ones are used - picture it up the one you are using

I actually did not mind the original electronic ignition (Prestolite) basically a complicated Dyna-S
with points the only wire from the cone is triggers. Placed opposite from the White wire on the coil. Good to Go

1978-1/2 models saw the intorduction of the electronic ignition system from MoCo. By 1980 models it was the V-2 fire system. As John mentioned, the original systems were a bit "iffy" which is why many just dumped them altogether and went back to points. The V-1 system is still in my 1978-1/2 FXE and actually works so I have left it. The V-2 system in my 84 FLH functions perfectly as well. Should either take a dump, I will convert to the Dyna S system (referenced by Racepres).
