‘77 Shovel - Engine teardown
I can't tell the exact year of either case. I imagine the R-H case is 75 or later because 75 was the first model year to have the crankcase production number (CPN) inside the gear compartment. But it looks like the CPN was machined off that case, as mentioned earlier.
I suspect your left case is about mid-71 or later because I don’t see a boss for an engine number. (Even though the Shovel left case changed as of 1970 models there was a number boss in the casting for a short while after that.)
For future reference here’s a CPN inside the gear compartment of a 77 case.

And from another 77 Shovel, here is an example of extra ID stamped at the rear of the cases. In this instance the letter is D but some other letters were also used.

Anything stamped on top of your cases near the holes for the rear engine mounting bolts? If nothing, is there any sign that something was removed? Photo?
