+1 to what john says. These guys here pretty much walked me thru my rebuild ('79 FXEF). Factory service manual is a MUST and it's worth the money.
Have you pulled the rocker covers off the heads at all? Now is a perfect time to replace the rocker cover gaskets, since you have to pull the heads to do it.
