Default Goodyear D402?

What is everyone's opinion on the safety of Goodyear Dunlop D402's? I'm in a bit of a predicament over what I want to do here with my tires.

I'm currently running a D402 in the rear that is only a few years old, and as for the front, I don't know the model, but I know its old and needs to go.

Now, obviously I want to match tires, and so ideally I would put a D402 on the front and call it a day. However, I'm concerned about the safety of these tires but I also don't want to spend almost $600 on two new tires & mounting.

What would ya'll do? what's your thoughts on these tires 🤔

I've been running Dunlop D402 front and rear (early Evo tour bike) for 140K miles and at least 1/3 of that in the rain.

No flats and I've never balanced, or needed to balance a single one. I get 10 - 13K out of the rear and change the front every 35K, even though the front would still pass inspection.

Not "Goodyear" Dunlop, just Dunlop.

D402 was the HD standard tire for a long time, not an expensive tire and plenty capable for around town or touring. There are better tires out there, but they will work just fine in all weather conditions. Again, standard tire for HD for at least 20 years.

Not sure where on the Island you live, or what kind of wheels you have, but I use East Coast Superbikes for this kind of thing. They will get you the tires, mount and balance. Will also do the bearings and hubs if needed. Also my go to guy for re-lacing of spoke wheels. If you do all of that, it will get expensive though. Cheapest move is tires from Amazon or J&P, plus a set of tire irons. If spoke wheels, get new rim strips and tubes. Good luck.

The 402 is arguably the most widely used tire in the Harley market for the last 25+ years. I think it will be fine to keep using. Get a front and Rear at the same time. If it has been a while have your wheel bearings repacked or at least checked if they are non serviceable. Your bike will handle better that it has in a while. It's worth the peace of mind. Don't over think it...

Any body got any ideas about getting the center hub off the rear wheels. Mine has a 1/2 bolt going through and the cover would be the nut. There is not slot or anything to be able to keep this from spinning. I was thinking about picking a spot on the outside image and drilling a 1/6 " hole all the way through and leave the drill bit in while I loosen the bolt.
All ideas are welcome. The wheels are off but the tires will not be here until Tuesday or Wed., so I've got until then.

Probably corroded in there from the looks of your wheel. You may be able to push on the outside and use an impact wrench on the inside. Or see if you can fit a C-Clamp between the spokes and compress the outside putting a cloth or something that will not mar the outside.

Or just drill out the center and replace with new, they are $37.00 each.
