im putting a reverse on my trike which has the early 5 speed with hydraulic clutch. ive got the later trapdoor and clutch cover to be fitted.my next question is are both end threads on main and counter shafts the same on all models
just went to my harley mech and said the sprockets supplied with the reverse will not screw on to the main and counter shafts but did screw on to a later shaft he had there so the early 5 speed must have a different thread.does anyone know what that thread size is. he even tried to run a three quarter inch die nut on the shaft with no success thanks all

All 5 speed mainshafts and countershafts use the same part number nut to retain the bearings, so we know that the thread pitch on all shafts is the same.
The part number for the nut is 35078-79.
Mainshaft part numbers changed several times, but the threads are the same.
Countershafts are all the same part number, all years.
"Early" and "Late" doesn`t tell us anything, this is a tech forum, tell us what year parts you are working with.
Your "mechanic" should have known that the threads on all 5 speed transmission shafts are the same...

never seen that - do you have thread files by any chance - or a machinist thread gage to count the number of threads on your shafts verses the number on the gear set
