Default Speedo/dash differnce

Hi all,

while researching various bits for my ‘77flh to replace some tatty/repop bits, I came across the fact the the dash for the nippon Seikko speedos were different to the ones for the Stewart Warner speedos ( I have the correct s/w 540 speedo-very faded but works).

I believe the difference is that the nippon has the trip spindle a little further forward. My dash is in pretty poor shape and the trip hole looks as though it has been enlarged as well as the trip **** pressing against the back of the hole. This would suggest it’s a later dash, so I’ll look for a correct one.

is there any way of identifying the earlier dash visually? I have two parts books, up to 78 and up to 84 and both only show two part numbers, one for chrome and one for primer.

searching the aftermarket, only one Dash is listed right thought to ‘91 so I’m expecting all of them to have the more forward Hole to match the repop Speedo’s.

Can anyone offer any more information to help?

thanks all, Jon

they became more sloppy with speedo to trip hole when they enlarger the mount holes for the speedo to slotted instead of a drilled hole

if you have a real oem speedo have it restored by the guy who does that - during riding year a re pop even a broken one is a way to keep riding it

Hi john, thanks for the info. My speedo works great so not worried about a rebuild, it has ‘character’ 😂 It has holes for the mounts rather than slots and I have replaced the solid bolt fixings with the later grommet and pin set up. I have also fitted an aftermarket rubber surround that supports the speedo, rather than just the rubber ring.

it was any knowledge on early/late dash panels, so I can try to identify the correct one for a Stewart Warner rather than have nippon one That would need the trip hole opening up.

Cheers-jon

as all of these machines they have been in service quite a while and will have blended parts - main reason most people are extremely stupid - lazy and incompetent < best explain I have

my guess your speedo is correct for the year of that machine and its at a turning point as farming out to cheaper suppliers was becoming the norm - AMF Harley was in big trouble at this time in history
