Ok after a week of sitting in the carb section with 40 views and no responses I will ask here which is what I was going to do originally anyway. I have a HD1c on my bike which is running pretty well as far as idle and acceleration goes but the plugs seem very black like it is running too rich. I use the best gas 94 octane that I can get. I do have a pop rivet tickler in the bottom which makes for easy starts but I am wondering if the inlet fork/needle setting was off would that cause it to be rich as in not seating firmly enough. It does appear ok though. Any help would be appreciated .
the sporty carb was always a thing even new - your ball check for the fuel delivery ( economizer valve ) ball or seat anything gets in its rich and will make it blead fuel at cruse speed -- the intermediate adjustment is 1/4 of a turn and a frizzle to go from too much fuel too to little lean - I get it - but a Bendix is your go to with adjustable main
BUT intake leakage is a real thing that will have you bald in a week make sure its not that - done care you just re did it
I took a Bendix off that seemed to work ok but without a doubt the tilly outperforms it even in butt dyno and seems more responsive. The main reason is I would like to run the stock distributor and tach with the cable drive and only the tilly gives you the room with it's flat bottom. It's so close to being spot on just a little rich. I will check the intake for leaks again but I think I've got that part ok. Thanks for your reply

I completely" get" you wanting to retain the stock carb.
If it`s not fouling plugs and runs good, I say run it.
My friend who was an HD dealer when these were OE claims that that these were decent carbs, just very sensitive to debris in fuel.
He added a filter to every new bike when it arrived
