I just recently had my top end gone through, 1983 flht, because I had leaking base gaskets and huge oil consumption problem, 1qt per hundred miles. The engine was in worse condition than we had guessed. It needed .030 pistons and rings, cylinders milled and honed to fit, 2 intake and 1exhaust valves and 1valve guide. Ok, all back together and seems to be running well except for a out of the blue back fire now and then. Mainly will happen if the bike is not completely warmed up.
My instructions were to stay out of the City and keep the rpms below 3000 for no less than 100 miles. I have done that for 200 hundred miles. It has used about 14 ounces of oil. I am running 60w.
My question is, is this normal oil consumption at this time? Will it drop in time? Have I done something wrong or has something possibly gone wrong with the refurbished engine? I have complete faith in my mechanic, over 30 yrs doing this.
I am so inexperienced with the Harley Shovelhead, I dont know what is normal or not. All my experience are with metric bikes. I am trying to learn as fast as I can so I will have the confidence to do my own wrenching like with my other bikes.
I don't know but some engines I have re-built used some oil at break in. Did you check the oil level at the start? I think this is a question for the mechanic you said you trust.
Yes I do trust him but, the collective years of knowledge and experience of this forum will never be achieved by one guy in my opinion . It is not possible nor practical for me to call him on my every little question when I feel like it. I thought that this is question that the forum could opine on either to calm my fears or alert me to a possible problem. You have said with your experience that some of your engine break ins use some oil. I have never had a new engine to break in this is my first. I just wanted to see if you guys thought this is normal for an engine break in. I try to learn from other people’s mistakes because I will not live long enough to make them all myself.
