Default thru bolts

Please tell me how it went Fshovel, I may have to pull mine as well.
Can you get your hand in there to hold the front cover when you pull it, and did you have to remove the battery tray?
Also, do the thru bolts come out of the primary, or do they stay attached?

Easier in the long run to drop the outer primary cover, yours has the long bolts not 2 studs you can only get to from the inside if memory serves me right. Won't swear to that been a while since I pulled a late model down.

The starter shaft housing and cover changed when HD went to the rear belt drive. The Hitachi starter motor (introduced for FX models in 1974) stayed the same thru the FX years. Long bolts to remove the motor from the housing are accessed from the starter motor side. Need to remove the support plate for sure. If you have club feet for hands, removing the battery tray definitely makes reomoving the starter motor easier and almost ensures you will not seperate the starter motor

Default Tripping circuit breaker

Mine is a 1977 FXE. I’ve got a brand new 310 cranking amp battery and a new 30 circuit breaker.
The starter wants to go but it is tripping the circuit breaker with the button or jumping it

across the solenoid. Any ideas ? I hate to pull the starter and find out it was something simple.
Thanks for any help.

take the solenoid in the mix it could be shorted - they fail way before a starter

Default Brushes & Springs

I can see the brushes wearing out. Do the brush springs wear out or ever break?

If I’m going to order parts, I would rather have everything I might need instead of having to order a second time and having to wait.
