Thanks Panz, that pic was taken up around Hurst castle. I now live in Michigan, and think its high also. It is very complete just disassembled with a good title. So what is the going rate for a basket?

This cost me $2.5K. First assembly looked like this

Finished it looks like this

FXS models bring more dollars to the table for sure, but even by California standards 4K for a basket is over the top.

Guess I would need to know why the bike was taken apart. How many miles on the clock. Condition of motor and tranny, wheels rims, swingarm and brakes. Original sheetmetal with original paint. If I were ever even to consider 4K for a basket, it would mean that every nut, bolt and cotter pin were in boxes and that all I needed to do was assemble the bike and hit the starter button and ride off into the sunset. I think that 3K would be tops and that's pushing it.

I was thinking $2.5K was about right. It has stock paint with 17k miles on the speedo. It has been apart for a long time, open and un covered. Plus it has the stock mag wheels. I think I will keep looking. Thanks for the advice. That Super Glide came out real nice!

I also think you are better off buying the bike you want rather than trying to clone something.

Here's my FXS with an FXE tank and handlebars. I think the best of both bikes, with the longer forks and mag wheels. Bought it for $3500 running, but tore it down to fix all the previous owner's mistakes and clean it up.

Yes, do it! You describe EXACTLY what I had done..."a bike that will take me back to my younger days." It is hard to describe all the sensations emitted from my shovel that are replays of my youth when I'm on her, my unabashed smile as I go on down the road says the most. The best part is many of the known issues have a better fix nowadays than 40 years ago. Be prepared, a lot of people who recognize a pretty correct shovel will be walking up to ask questions and or tell you about thiers. Today I brought my shovel for the 90 day checkup under the build warranty at 1,565+ miles. A few vibration related items but nothing I couldn't deal with myself if it was past the 90 day window. It came out solid, rides better (suspension upgrades) and I dare say way more powerful than my '79 - 74 inch FXEF was. The Low Rider, Sturgis look is what I was hung up on back then. Now I've come to appreciate the 3.6 Super Glide tank for the way it shows the engine and the easy removal! My '79 was converted to a dual belt set up. Now I've learned to leave things stock since we are so far removed from the days these were the newest HD's. Back then we did crazy chit man to our scoots.
Also, there were two shovels for sale on the Indys showroom floor.

^^ Sure looks like those may be Kayaba Fork lowers!!
I will get a closer look....Later..
A 1974 FX (no E) here has them..
BTW it was the FXS that shuffled in the "longer fork" and therefore the "different rake" BS from the MoCo.. I like the look...But, prefer to ride, Short front ends!!!
