To further derail the thread I didn't know the 72 Superglide had a reverse shift pattern, at least the shifter is on the left side.

FXS - Mag wheels, speedo and Tach on the dash, Lockhart oil cooler, dual front discs, swing out kicker arm, lower seat height, 33° front end rake.
FXE - Spokes, Speedo no tach, single front disc, larger swing out kicker pedal, 30° front end rake.

LOL
If you look at it... all they did was turn the shifter lever Bassackwards.. had to happen!!!
But... some 1973/4 FX's had that also... harder to determine the Why of it... except the difference between FL and FX linkage.. when they was also changing the damn Ratchet lever from down to up...(Or Vise verse) sometimes one too many changes at once, backfires!!!!

But... it is Important to Note... The Frame Rake Never changed... the effective rake (really the Trail Numbers) changed Only because the fork tubes growed longer... Look it up..
Thanks MoCo

LOL again... see above... Long been known that an FL has the Drum lever upside down from the FX... look it Up..
the linkages force the correct Ratchet cover/lever, in order to maintain the direction desired!!At that time there were some that the MoCo fouled up... or... most possibly... the one being discussed, is Not Original in Every Way... They are rather old Equipment and have seen some few unscrupulous, or more probably, unconcerned with originality... owners..

The one I was talking to you about today has the reverse shift pattern and I've read many came that way. Some I read about said as late as 74 could've come that way.

Found this in an old post on this forum......

My 1974 FXE Superglide had one up, three down. Stock for that year. This pattern was favored by racers. In 1975 the the federal government mandated all shifters on bikes sold in the USA to be on the left side. Harley went to one down, three up in 1975. Yes, you can move the shiftdrum "up-side-down" to change the pattern. I personally liked the one up, three down.

Besides reversing the shifter drum cover, using a FL shifter cover will do the same
thing on an FX.
