Hey all,
Just started having a problem. It won't shift! Was in neutral getting ready to go for a ride. Dropped her in 1st, took off and now it's stuck there! The drum rotates smoothly, springs back and forth but very little resistance. Really just feels like the springs, nothing else. Tried rocking the bike, no change. Tried shifting at various different speed, no change. Clutch in/out, no change. Disconnected the shift linkage just to confirm it wasn't hitting, nope, that's fine. Clevis feels good, not much play. Before I tear her apart thought I'd throw it up here for ideas.
Thanks,
-Brian
4 springs are in the unit the 2 large are what brings is back and forth as you shift up and down < you said they feel as if they are working
the 2 small around the size of a ball point pen clicker - they with the drum cog activate the shift drum and we have seen them wear enough in the selector so at one point they stick in the out spot causing what you have
A mistake in starting it - it will land on its side on the floor - take it apart dont cheap out pull the trans and re do all of it as everything wears as a unit
clutch springs adjusted to tight ?. i would take the derby cover off and see if plates are separating with the lever in. on mine someone adjusted the springs to tight and had trouble shifting. on mine 2-3 threads on the studs should be showing and shifts easily.. before it had 5-6 threads showing
Thanks all, spoke with my local indy this morning who coicidentally is named John as well. Said the same thing as JZ, shifter pawl stuck in, may be able to free it by rapping on it but it will happen again. Best to rebuild it. Now to go start ripping off the pimary. Damn, and thought I was done, LOL!
Tore in to her today. Found a piece of a broken spring it there as well as one of the shifter pawls stuck in the down position. Cleaned up the pawls and moving freely. Look good to me but will definitely have my indy check em out. Need to order new springs and some gaskets. Found a few grooves on my 3 finger hub and also some of the anti-rattle clips missing/broken off the steel plates. Will be replacing quite a bit but very well worth it.
