Real light on info 4 different pumps were in the shovels while they all remove the same way and opinions vary as to what really works - while mike is a good guy your asking different questions

correct way to do what your looking to do - remove the push rods then cam cover then the camshaft and breather valve that your looking for deep scores in the block - oil lines and oil pump bolts and the clip in the cam cover that holds the drive gear - then slide the oil pump out and dissasemble completly -we use new springs and the one 3/8 ball

then 2 thing can happen we have a tool that reseats the ball seat but we have had luck with valve grinding compound lapping the pumps seat with a 3/8 ball end pushrod do it 3 times and wash it each time - new gaskets and re assemble — must be spotless you used valve grinding compound - did i say spotless

whaever you do - do not smash a 3/8" ball bearing into the seat with a hammer - you will crack the seat - to lap the seat you will need to remove the pump - JZ knows that clover lapping compound is the best bet to get the seat finished - you can hot glue a 3/8 ball onto a metal rod - add some clover - lap back and forth - this will work - forget that seat cutter - it will leave a rough chamfer and you'll need to lap it anyway - maybe some guys can do it with the cutter - I have also used a ball mill to clean up the seat - and I have used metal inserts pressed into the land - just beware that the seat could be cracked and then you need a new pump or an insert pressed into the pump

What is does is re shapes the seat and a skinnie painters brush and dykem lacquer thinner and to clean you can like a valve seat make it wide enough to actually do the job intended - and lapping it and watching the circle come into round again - but again with no experience or being shown you could destroy a OEM original re usable iron or first edition alloy oil pump
