Ilm having tyrouble timing my 76 fxe. It has 84 in. s/s flywheels in it with high compression in it with a s/s cam. Points and condenser are new points set at 18. I can spin the front intake pushrod just before the TP shows up in the timing hole. The bike starts good and idles alright its off just a hair. With the bike on the lift table if you slowly start to open it up its wants to miss and spit alittle Flame out the front pipe. Riding it on the street as soon as you get getting the RPM;s up it does the same. I;m running s/s super E carb and even switched carbs no difference. I;ve been messing with this for a week or so; and HATE taking it to a shop. The man at the shop where I go says it should be the correct letters on the wheels for timing it. OR am I doing something wrong scratching my balding head over this one.
Did you check your mechanical advance? Does it open/close with NO binding?
Have you tried advance/retard your timing?
How many beers did you have before setting the timing?
NO BEERS !!!! advance unit works good I;m dumb founded honestly been working on iron head sportys for 47 yrs panhead for 10 yrs shovels for 15 yrs. I changed cam this winter from Andrews to S/S. It ran great for about 150 miles a month ago then it started doing this ****.And I havnt found the problem yet
the advance unit is screwing around and not moving like it should - especially if its a pin on pin and not the one with the bearings for the weights
second thing is the intake seals - i know but more times then you can count we have found them as the running issue - especially the air filter mounting influencing the manifold seals
lets not forget the points condenser is always suspect
Larry - how did you set the timing? if it has SS wheels you can take the serial number and call SS and verify the timing marks - I have SS wheels in my 78 and I believe the straight line (vertical) is the advance mark.
when I put TF in the inspection hole the front intake pushrod was loose; I had to keep turning the flywheel ( put bike in 4 gear) until I could just start to spin the pushrod valve just closed.Took it out for test ride needs alittle tuning started to cut out at 60 mph in 3 gear. Hey thanks for all the help and information NOW ITS BEER TIME
John taught me the easiest way to adjust the valves is when one intake is at full lift adjust the other. Repeat with the exhausts. Doesn't matter what marks are on the flywheel. Ignition timing is a different story obviously
