Thanks, that is completely understood. What confused me was the first post talking about aligning marks on 2 different gears.
We just check the simple things first. Sometimes someone will acquire a bike that's been played with by a previous owner that mixed/matched the wrong parts from different model years. I may be remembering wrong, I think somewhere in this forum someone was explaining that mixing these parts inside the cam chest can also affect the oiling system.
Only screws with the oiling if the breather gear is seriously mistimed then the engine blows oil everywhere and doesn't return back to the tank very well.

I can't find it now, I think jonjjzjz was talking about the cone needs to have the correct passageways for an 'end oiler' cam? Been a long time since I've enjoyed some good shrooms, I could be having a flashback
No he's right first couple year cone motors had their own nosecone and the cases had the oiler port drilled in a different spot . Mismatch things the crank didn't get oiled.
You could adapt things by doing a mod on the cases and later nosecones as long as you had the correct pinion bushing in there.
Early cranks feed from a port on the side of the pinion shaft later feed through the end.
Lotta backyard types roached things not knowing this and putting shiney swap meet covers on early motors.
I thought 76 shovel's used the early cam with no line in the cam gear. And 78 1/2 used the latter cam with the line in the gear which was also used in the Evo motors.. can't mix and match..

You got it, 77 was the change year, 78 & up had the groove on th gear.
You had to watch the 78's never knew what was in one till you opened it.
