Default confused

I recently purchased a 1976 shovelhead motor that had been rebuilt and sat for 25 years. Of course , I tore it apart. I found that it a new Andrews Letter A grind cam in it. The cam has a dot on it and the pinion gear has a line on it. They appear to one tooth off. Let me further explain, Dots align with lines, Teeth
align with valleys. I can time this as one tooth advanced or one tooth retarded. Early 76 motor and a later cam?

I believe later model cams will have a line (white arrow), earlier models (pre 79?) will not.

Picture up your pinion and the cam gear and the breather gear - we see all kinds of blending going on

scan date what you have and if its correct

Take a picture of the cam & pinion gear together so we can sort this for you.

Never mind. I put my glasses on and found the other timing mark on the early pinion gear. Guess I'm getting senile.
Thanks for the quick responses.

What is your white arrow pointing at? Looks like there is a line about 1630 on the gear, seems like the arrow would point this out... just wondering.

He's pointing at the little machined groove on the gear face. There's a different gear tooth pitch and the groove denotes its later one, have to match things or the case case gets very noisy and tends to chew things up.

The round circle. Early models didn't have that

Well my eyes aren't what they used to be but I enlarged the photo and don't see anything near the arrow no groove no round circle. What is the mark at 1600??

Well bud you can't see it they ain't gonna be any explaining it then. And the hash marks you see on the gear teeth are the timing marks for the pinion and the breather gear. This ain't the f**king military use standard clock time like 2 o clock and 4 o clock.
