Default '82 FLH winter project

This bike hasn't been on the road since 2001 from what I can tell from the paperwork. Now that I have a clean title in my name I can get started on it. I have no clue what is original or not. Not planning a restoration, just go through it and make it road worthy again. I'll probably be asking a lot of dumb questions along the way.

Looks like a good starting place, have fun, and don't be shy about asking questions. It's interesting that it was converted to belt drive somewhere along the way.

Just make sure you use the proper parts names out of the OEM factory books workshop and parts - you will need anyway

and looking for stuff on flea bay use the OEM part numbers as well

good on you fining that gem - any question on this site cant be dumb because you asked and will receive the correct help

The bike came with a BUNCH of extra parts and a factory service manual. I haven't decided if I'll keep the belt final drive yet. Amongst the extras is a brand new never out of the box Revtech 5 speed, if I go with it I have to convert back to chain final. If I stay with the 4 speed rotary top I can probably sell the Revtech for close to what I have into the bike.

What you will find out is the rev tech 5 speed is not a sort after trans - all it does is add and other shift point between the gears as hi gear is the same as your 4 speed and that 5 speed - so it does nothing but make you shift it one more time every time and no road speed to engine RPM savings

why Change the belt they works well smoother and no white wall mess -

I would ride it for a complete season - at that point what you dont seem to like makes sense to re do

As John says you don't gain anything with the korean 5 speed and those aren't top shelf items to begin with, both the 4 and the 5 have same final ratio, is no over drive with the 5.

Nice score on the bike and you'll like the belt trust me. Going belt final on my old shovel was one of the best upgrades I did for her.

Best advice, get her road worthy and ride her for a full season. First it will help you work out the remaining bugs and second you will figure what you like and what you hate. Then next winter makes those modifications. It will probably take at least two or three seasons to get her the way you want, but it will be worth it. Good luck.

Sound advice guys. I think I will leave the four speed for a while, still coming out to get everything cleaned up and check the belt setup so far I've found way too much wrong to trust anything that has been done. Done to date is clean and rebuild carb, found gaskets and o-rings missing, rebuilt rear brake master and caliper, caliper was installed wrong, rebuilt front caliper and waiting on kit for master. Also had to clean some rust from inside the tank and tins are going to my airbrush guy soon.

White vinegar eats rust in a few days inside the gas tanks and its cheap - fill both to the very top and check once a day add just a bit more if needed
