Go get a Harley-Davidson AGM battery. No filling, spilling, or acid drip tube, plus they last years not months! Buy once -cry once! There are cheaper but when it comes to batteries for a Shovelhead you get what you pay for.
Welcome to the club, here is my 79 I picked up a few months ago. Early 79 had rachet top trans, late 79 rotary top, what you got?
Congrats, nice! Lucky guy, How did you stumble upon an original owner, low mileage 1979 Electra glide?
When I checked out the pic I was going to mention lose the wet cell and go with AGM. Replace the tires once you get it fired up.
Man you are going to have a LLLL OOO NNNN GGGG winter in Jersey. LOL
If you don't have already get
HD manual and HD parts catalog.

nice bike -- I had a red '76 -- believe it or not I haven't gotten into the bike at all --u-haul trailered it home and put it into the garage-- the guy got no response to his ads to sell it and I offered him a respectable price considering he was the original owner and was connected to it -- 2 months later he called and said if I still wanted it then it was mine -- he gave me shop and parts manuals a white buddy seat and another black seat with 2 new wrapped tires and it does have the chrome covers for the frame and yeah it's gonna be a cold winter but it is warm behind the fairing
thanks for the conversation
That is a sweet bike. I find it rather cool that my 2014Ultra-limited still has many almost identical features as your 79’ Some things about a Harley don’t change and I like that.
However, my 14’ runs a lot smoother than those old shovels. But those old shovels have character my cookie cutter bike lacks.
On a nice summer night I would rather hop on my shovel than the newer bike. More fun to ride!
Tom
If your some what handy its possible to do the job on the site lots of experienced guys who help with correct info
Im about an 8 out of 10 and my sons landlord owns a shop in Tuckerton but this site is great --would've been great in the 70's instead of the drive up to Teds in Newburgh The last bike I did
Was a hot rod stroker sporty guy back then from Staten Island - my go to for special machine was blitz - Wally in Boonton nj - joe perez - stroker motors in mount tabor nj - then later a friend skimbo. Owned liberty cycles in jersey city off Harrison ave in the ghetto
Took 4 kids and colleges and weddings but there's a shovel in the garage again . Bought it from the original owner . 21k miles . Needs carb work and a main seal leak in the trans . I think it was worth waiting 30 yrs .
That's a good find. Looks like its pretty much original too. Love those old Electra Glides
I ride a '79 FLH

yeah coming from the original owner (retired law enforcement) he had no reason to blow smoke -- he told me the bike was stock and I knew it was when I saw it -- only add on is the chrome motor covers I have to put back on after I do the repairs
Was yours this nice when you bought it or did you go through it
