Thoughts on this 77 FXE?
I've been looking at Shovelheads with the intention of building a Bobber. I found this '77 FXE. What's your thoughts?
Owner's description:
Trans could use seals on both sides but you could get away with just
checking the trans oil every couple of days. Needs a new battery.
The most important thing is that this bike runs great and starts within
2 to 8 kicks. The motor is tight.
I'm not really sure of the exact mileage, We would have to estimate that.
The top end was redone about ten years ago (valves, seats, guides, oil seals
and head gaskets). The jugs were honed and .030 over Wiseco pistons were put
in with hastings rings. The bottom cases were never split. I did put in an
Andrews cam in the cone with solid lifters. Blue streak points and
condenser. Wide glide front end. 3"open belt drive. Five finger clutch
basket, Ramjet clutch retainer with Barnett Kevlar clutch plates. Heal toe
shifter. Half moon floor boards. I put a two tooth bigger trans sprocket so
the gears are a little longer. Rear fender and struts are hand made. Oil
cooler. The bike is kick start only.
The title is clear, and the frame # and engine # match .
He was asking $5500, then went down to $4800.
Thanks for your opinions !!

I have kick & elec start. My bike starts with 1 or 2 kicks cold. After 3 hours on the road heated up.
It can be an SOB some times. I only weigh 175 and that is part of it.
Any more input appreciated.
Thanks, Ron

Well, I'm gonna look at it this week. I've done a lot of looking and rarelysee any Shovels for under $6k, so I'm thinking this price ain;'t too bad.
Any more input appreciated.
Thanks, Ron
Here is what bothers me a little..

Is this your first hd ? man if it is please take your time, I see it time after time, a good friend had a sporty years ago, well buying a house it had to go, then after 20 years or so, his wife said hay go out a get one used, he brought the first one he saw on e-bay, with-in 75 miles, a sporty with a mid-glide front end, 4 gal gas tank, look pretty good but had a miss ?
the wiring was done by goof-*****, I told him take that tank off trace the rear turn signals back up front make sure they don't interfer with any ign wiring, do it right, are you sure he ask me ?
I took out the oil dip stick and handed it to him, smell ?
gas !
fix the freakin wiring don't ride it untill you doand change the oil/filter
Ron, just take your time, this is the time to unload bikes, it's the buying season.
Good luck,

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
If it had +.30 pistons TEN YEARS AGO and it was, uh, honed....not rebored....well i would definitely take a compression tester and a buddy with you to check the state of the bores. If it smokes at any time (tell the guy to take it for a ride, and follow him ), that's a warning also.
remove the spark plug from each hole, screw in the comp tester (available at auto parts store shere in the UK anyway...), throttle WFO and stomp up and down on the pedal and look for a reading of something over 100 in each cylinder, the two to be within 10 per cent of each other.
IF the motor is warm (feel the heads) when you arrive, kick it yourself.
Then tell the guy you will come back in a few hours and start it from COLD. Both should be easily do-able if bike is in tune.
Four speed trannys do leak. But if they leak a lot you could definitely be looking at tearing into the box. Make sure you get a test ride, and that if shifts easy into every gear.
Again, a good price, but it is SO EASY to spend $2000 making it shipshape when you will find something cherry-ish for $6K. IF the seller is a good guy, he won't object to such reasonable checks. I wouldn't. And mine is kick only.
