Default adjusting hydrolic lifter pushrods

I have an 84 LFH and have what sounds like a lifter "click". I know that just before I got the bike a couple months ago that the rear cylinder got a new head gasket. I think that the pushrods need to be adjusted and have read my clymers manual. Could someone please explain in terms that I can understand the proper procedure for adjusting the pushrods on this engine?

Thanks!

Default RE: adjusting hydrolic lifter pushrods

just to keep it simple. with the engine cold. rotate the engine until the rear exhaust valve opens (push rod moves up) when the push rod is all the way up you will now adjust the FRONT exhaust valve. loosen the adjuster untill the push rod is free and has some up and down movement, start to tighten the adjuster just until this up and down movement is lost, but still can spin the push rod.at this point you have zero lash. if you have solid lifters you can tighten things up. if you have hyd. you will need to tighten about 3 turns more. then let it set for about 5-10 mins. at that point you should be able to spin the push rod. rotate the engine until the rear intake valve is open. now you can adjust the FRONT intake the same way.
When the front exhaust push rod is up, adjust the rear exhaust. ect. I hope this is clear enough. I can show a person alot better.

You will need to bleed the lifter before adjusting the pushrod. You do this by removing the lifter from the lifter block and sticking a safety pin (safety pin works best) through the bottom (this releases a check ball)while pushing down on the top of the lifter with your thumb and releasing the fluid in the lifter.By doing this , the lifter is not holding pressure against the push rod for a more acurate adjustment.(These are Harley's directions) Personally I prefer solids.
