Here is a page from a magazine road test of a 73 superglide and the horn is between the cylinders (FL style?) Maybe 71-72 the same?
The Way I remember it also...
BTW the Never been molested 1975 FXE chassis in the barn, has No evidence of a "clamp" etc, ever being in that location ... just like the '74 FX

So it stands to reason that with the horn inside behind the headlight on the touring bikes, the FX was introduced with a sporty front end they used the same frame but nowhere to hide the horn. Add a P-clamp to the leg and away you go.
Paul, in the frame tube is there a dimple for a set screw? Some frames had a dimple for a set screw when a handshifter was used so maybe the factory also put a dimple in the frame to accommodate the set screw for the 7172 FX horn bracket? I havent seen it yet but its worth a look.
As for the horn bracket that was welded to the frame, I think that first appeared with the 1977 Low Rider.

Are you saying this frame you posted above is a 72? If its a 72 then its missing at least five things which would normally be present.
And what about the things I highlighted with arrows? None of these things is consistent with 72. And if the horn bracket is welded on then it isnt consistent with 72 either.

I know certainly '83 and '84... thought they made those changes on the rear Belt regular production models (1982 FLH)... But... I wasn't paying close attention..
