Tranny Problem!
Hey Guys ,
Replaced trans sprocket seal and when tightening nut , shaft binds up. It is a 1975 FLH 4 speed. Used a Genuine James #JGI-35230-39-DL seal. Everything went together fine. Cleaned everything up after removing old one. Installed cork gasket , greased spacer , seal , and shaft . Used Hylomar gasket maker to O.D. of seal before driving it in. It has a seal nut with an o-ring on the back side toward sprocket. Key is in place , seal feels flush to case opening , put sprocket , locking tab and nut back on. HD manual recomends 140-150 ft. pounds torque on the nut. Before tightening anything up , checked main shaft and counter shaft by hand turning them in neutral as well as in gear. No problems noted, turns by hand . A little stiff but , not hard to turn. Tightened nut by hand until no sprocket side to side wobble. As soon as I tighten nut up the shaft starts tightening up. A couple flats more tightening and the shaft locks up. Can't turn it by hand!!!!! Any ideas where I might have screwed up??? Read manual procedure before hand , during work, and after to try and figure it out. I am missing something , just don't know what.

OK we see this before
the original seal was open backed single lip and the cork went into the open area
the usual replacement is a double lip seal and the back is closed ( no room for the cork it crushes and causes the gear to not want to turn ) as it compresses the works
the fix is another kit and start over - remove all of it - i have both in stock if i remember i will picture what i think happened and show the two seals

Racpres , Like that one "in your Sandwich"
Johnjzjz Everything tracks as to what you posted. The closed back seal looks much beefier, I assume that is the way to go ( without the cork gasket!!!! LOL!)
At least it isn't a major cluster, Live and learn from your mistakes!

Hey Guys, Got the new trans. seal installed without the cork seal. When installing the nut (seal nut with o-ring behind it ) , as soon as I get the nut more than hand tight , the sprocket is in a bind ! Hand tight using regular ratchet. Took it back apart and don't see any rub marks on seal , it is flush with the case opening. Spacer turns by hand , key in place. Put it back together. Tapped the socket against the sprocket a couple of times while spinning by hand. Tightened socket about a flat or two on the nut and cannot spin the sprocket unless using both hands or a screw driver! This seems way to tight and no where near being torqued. Any ideas? Or have I screwed something up?????????
