1973 AMF opens York Assembly
I went back with my kids about 20 years ago. They said it was the last year they were test driving the new bikes on rollers at the end of the line. That was the one thing that really made an impression on my young mind, how they could keep them upright on rollers.
The second trip was a stark contrast from the first, much cleaner and brighter for one. Somewhere in the '80's Harley did the Japanese Kaizen thing and eliminated the overhead racks with hundreds of motors circulating, waiting their turn for installation in frames. Now they do 'Just In Time' delivery and subassembly production is in dedicated areas.
