I just had to replace my rubber seal last night. It is a tight fit! I boiled the rubber seal for a few minutes and lubed it up to get it on. I failed to mention that in the posting here. A butter knife helped getting the last tiny lip under the bayonet mount. I still have one more seal for the next time. This last one lasted about 14 years. That is a lot of turns off and on!

I have replaced those seals so many times on my bayonet style caps and they always leak. Fill up and if you hit the throttle too hard afterwards it sprays back. If you fill up and then put it on the jiffy stand you come out to a puddle. The surface is clean. Seals are James.
Tips here other than not filling tanks to capacity?

14 years for those seals is pretty good, the old cork seals lasted a lifetime but when they needed replacing it was a job to get them to fit.
Perhaps someone can help me. I am troubleshooting the 1980 Flh stalling on me and want to confirm that I do or do not have a right side vented cap venting properly. I have read if the bike stops or stalls while running to slightly unscrew the cap or take it off and start the bike again. Currently sent my Pingel Petcock in for a rebuild and starting at clean tanks and going through the fuel flow to Super E chasing a gremlin so to speak. Is there a way to blow air through the cap or squirt a liquid through the little hole in the right side cap once it is turned upside down off the bike to check? Does a swelled gasket needing replaced stop the cap venting?
Also see the old Dixie Superior Caps and wonder if they are a good value or match for the original caps as
aftermarket caps all that are available? Thanks for the help.
