Default Any suggestions?

I've just got new tires for my 81shovelhead.
Front went back on yesterday.
But before I put rear back on is there anything I should be checking?
It's a greasy mess in there so I'm gonna clean up swingarm, chain and surrounding areas.
Can swingarm be lubed without removal?
Just wanted to check before I slap it all together again..
Tx!

Clean, inspect, repack or replace wheel bearings.

They may have installed a zirc fitting by 81. Look around after you cleaned it up.

You can also check the swing arm bearing preload if you unbolt the shocks and can get your hands on a small spring (fish) scale to measure with.

Checking the preload is very important. Too much and you crunch the bearings

Jeez......never even heard of this!
So......what exactly do I do?
Unbolt the shocks.
Hang a fishing scale from fender strut and hook end to swing arm.
What kind if reading is acceptable?
And how should that reading

correlate to the shocks?

The procedure is in the factory service manual. Best I can remember is with the swingarm bolt loose, measure the weight of the swing arm. Then tighten the bolt until it takes 4 or 5 (?) more pounds to lift it up.

I have the HDSM on order....it should arrive this week.
$144 which isn't bad from what I've seen.
What I do t understand is....regardless of the SW weight, isnt that a moot poi t when you reinstall the shocks?
The shocks will be supporting the entire SW?

Yes, but tightening the swing arm bolt puts a load on the bearings, and that load is what the added 4 or 5 (?) pounds is measuring.

Pull the swingarm bolt don't be surprised if it's grooved where the bearing rides on the chain side, you run a finger across and feel it, replace it, Impacts the feel and handling of the bike far more than you know.
