Actually both gl4 and gl5 contain EP additives sulfur/phosphorous - 5 has about twice that of 4 - most of the newer formulatons encapsulate the additives to reduce their corrosive properties - anyway - BelRay make a superb 10 dollar qt of Big Twin gear oil - it is gl5 - but is safe for our trannies - it is my understanding that the gl5 classification in modern fluids does not mean it contains corrosive sulfur/phosphorous....I recall the Mobil 1 synthetics are safe as are many others - a lot of the modern fluids are rated gl4/gl5 - but as others here said - use 60W or 50W VR1 - or do the old 50:50 STP/50W - that was a real old trick from the days whhen oil came in a tin can
The Jims 4 speed trans rebuild kit says it's made in the USA.
Paul
once upon a time that could be believed - today the box comes and if you really look the box is made in the USA
Jims stuff was once real - then i kept getting what we found to be garbage - the reamer for shovel rocker arm bushings is very expensive 200 bucks - well the reamer is only sharp for maybe 3 engines and its the steel not the edge is the cutter - the flat side front compensator Pin type nut remover i have 4 every one Jims and every one the pins are too hard and snap off but the tool metal is too soft and smears off to the side before the pin snaps from the lean that are over 100 bucks and they act up on the first job we hade one out of tool steel like our original Jims was - they sold me lifters as a dealer and i can show you the roller still on the lifter it must be made out of sheet metal - will picture up later maybe i will remember - sent the lifters back one month later from buying them they told me they were timed out old stock - so like cardboard in a open area its no longer and good because its sat too long on the shelf - they said thats out policy go buy some place else you dont like it yea so we did
was told you need to speak yo no man Engrish to talk to the shop
Thanks John. So it sounds like Eastern Motorcycle Parts is the only option for these parts. Is the same true for the MDG case race and countershaft bushings on the 4 speeds?
I don't have an account with Eastern, but see their parts listed with some of the usual online vendors. Are there other sources of Eastern parts that you can be sure you are getting what you are paying for?
