Default Crash Bar

Is there a crash bar ( engine guard ) that I could put on my '81 FXS that would fit. Maybe from another model or even after market.

Anything is possible if you have the time and skill. Outside of that there aren’t many bolt on ones available outside of the common one for a Shovelhead posted above by Racepres:

Not my bike but it’s a great custom outside of the normal Shovelhead builds.

In case you didn't get what they are saying, the crash bar from any FLH of that era will fit your bike.

Any 4-Speed... Not a "T" (5-speed)

With a qualifier... It will depend on if you have forward controls and which rear brake master cylinder you are using. I had to find a year specific crash bar for my 81 because the previous year's did not fit.

There is always a generic one that clamps to the lower legs though.

My '81 FXS has highway pegs that mount where the engine guard would bolt to and the upper mount goes where the oil cooler goes so I would have to make a relocating bracket. So this may not be a direct bolt on and done type of thing. I figured that a FLH would bolt on to the frame with nothing else there. No clamp on one for me I would think.

Even with FXWG, Hiway pegs ( Note; Not Aftermarket stuff)... look how the bottom of the bar mounts.. Not that Difficult...gotta be a 4-speed frame..

I agree, It is all on how the bottom of the bar mounts to the frame. I will have to find an example to look at.

I do Not see what your dillema could be... look at FLH board Mounts...Front mount is where the front board mount lives... on my FXWG the bar would need to mount at the front Master cylinder mounting bolt... if I didn't get where I needed to be (due to odd/aftermarket Stuff) a short strap of Steel...and all Forgiven!!!
Edit; I do Know that some E-Glide Sports, had Boards..no problemo, and some had FXWG type Forwards.. still not insurmountable..
