Default Electric starter

Original starter is old and tired armature wobbles and worn bearing and bushing shot needs a complete rebuild most parts are available except I cannot find the brass bushing in the one end it probably an off the shelf bushing., It's such a PIA to get to and for the sake of reliability I'll buy new one. Rebuild my original if for no other reason just to keep the case with the Harley Davidson stamp on it. Did that with my generator a long time ago.
Drag Specialties advertises an OEM high torque replacement, same cost as standard starter. In another post I questioned an AGM battery and going that route and engine compression is around 9:1,
Anyone running one of these? battery or bat cables need upgrade for the high torque option?

Drag Specialties Black High Torque Starter for Models Equipped w/Prestolite Starters

  • Manufactured using heavy-duty armature commutators, large drive-end bearings and needle bearings in the com-end caps

Don't fall for that "high torque" claim unless you just want bragging rights on how much you spent.

Buy a cheap one off amazon for about $125. I did about 60k miles ago, still turns it well. I'm not one to cheap out, but what works , works.

Just check the end bolts. A 1/4" is a Prestolite. A 5/16" is a Hitachi and the end gear is different.

D&D auto electric in west Denver/ Wheatridge works with a lot of older stuff, might have the bushings you need.

An auto-electric shop should be able to rebuild for not much money. One near me has done my '66, also a '65 Deere 24v backhoe starter, each for under $50. Probably more now.
