I'm sure that would be fine and others do the same thing. I just have a problem running a bolt in and out of a threaded hole in aluminum which is over 30 years old and has been heated and cooled countless times from running the engine. Every time that bolt comes out and goes back in a chance of pulling the threads are there. A stud came in the head when manufactured and if installed correctly will stay in the head, this way the threads being worked are on the stud a piece of steel not aluminum so I stick with that. And my machinist who's been in the belly of a navy ship for years doing what he dose best and now a machinist in our small town says thats how it should be done. Thats my think'n

Yeah, I hear what you're saying, makes perfect sense. Hopefully if a lock washer works, then there won't be a need to evertouchit again. Sounds like a great source of info you got there too. I may go with a lock washer for now, but eventually the stud sounds like the way to go.

I went with the advice of the Locking bolt pictured above... I would have rathered it back out as it stripped out the head. It is a new head, S&S, so not an old worn out hole. No biggie, will get the stud tapped in today I think, depends on what time I get out of work.

Thanx for all the advice.

yup the stud is the only way to fly, especially if you have new heads. the quickest way to wallow them out is using a bolt in and out all the time or vibration etc. Stud em use the heavyduty permenant type high temp loc tite and then you can double nut the stud or wire it or even use the e clip retainers. The main thing is you are keeping from having to work on hte flanges on your heads eventually when they get wrung out. Like they love to do. Just a silly question too, do you have your pipes secondary mounted as well. Its important especially for a shovel because of the vibration it help when the pipes arent allowed to just flop back and forth at certain rpms and literally unscreww your mounting bolts. Good luck. D.
