Default 1982 bagger questions

I am not sure what I am asking, so I am not sure what I am going to get in response.....
A woman at my work had her husband pass away about a year ago and she is now looking to sell his bike. this is what I know about it

it is an 1982 shovel head
it was an ex shriner bike, and has the speedo on the tank.
It has not run for a few years, but it did run when it was last stored.
It has some kind of electric problem where after it gets hot it will not restart
As I understand it the bike is cosmetically very good and has about 25k on it

I am going to go look at in a week or so

I guess I am looking to see rough estimate on what it is worth. ( I know that is hard without seeing it) and any thoughts on the elc issue. I do know it has a new starter on it, but I don't know about the solenoid.

I do like the idea of a shovel sitting between my twin cam and my hot rod.

I guess it comes down to this, what do you think?

Scott

Well, according to my info there were only 19 FLHP Shiner bikes for that year model. I do not have a clue what sets the shiner apart however, but I assume there has to be a way to tell.HD production lists show that five FLHP models were available...FLHP-80 Police, FLHP-80, FLHP Delux, FLHP Shrine, and plain FLHP.

Need more info on the starting problem, doesn't crank, doesn't fire, whats going on or not?? You can replace all the starter electrical for 300-400 or so, or put a kicker on it, they always work. If its ignition could spend another 200-400, or put points on it, they always work. Its worth whatever you're willing to pay for it, I would guess-timate 82 bagger worth 5-10K, depending on what it is or isn't. JMHO, YMMV, etc.

when you say it won't start when its hot do you mean when the bike leaves the house and maybe stops 20 - 30 miles later and the bike wont start up? generall rule of thumb on this is the stator isn't charging the battery.

there are other things to truoble shoot on the electrical issue but like other members have said - more info is needed.

What does she want for it? Being that somethings broke and electrical has been the most difficult for me anyways, that needs to be factored in to a point. I wouldn't want to take advantage of an elderly lady whose husband just died, I don't want to screw myself either. Theres a fair price in here somewhere. Kelly blue book seems to hover around 65-7200$ retail(resale), although it doesn't list for the shriner addition(however much that factors into the price?). 25,000 ain't alot of miles either. Will she let you poke around on it to get a better idea what condition its in?

she is real open to me comng by and looking at it and poking around. I told her I will bring a camera with and take a few pictures and she is fine with that. I think it will be a couple of weekends before I get over there to see it, but I will post the pictures when I get them

Coyotedustr,
Believe me when I tell you, this "electrical" problem can be a real elusive thing... However, Here's a possibility not everyone attempts right off. The coil. Mine gave up performing efficiently when it warmed. It's a cheap part and your shovel will love you for a brand spankin' new one, even if that's not the source of your woes.

JMFUO - but 25 rounds on an 82 Shriner, electrical problem or not, if you ain't interested, I know a couple of ppl who are. First off, I gotta believe you wrench with a rod in the grudge. You can replace the HD ign with Dyna or Mallory electronic, it's a no brainer and a BIG gainer. New batt, cables, solenoid, upgrade the charging system, and THEN a new starter ifneed be. Again, only 25 rounds, it's worth workin' on. If you have "all" the pieces in hand, you could start on it Sat morn, and be riding Sun afternnon, IN STYLE.
