I had the same issue and could not figure it out for the life of me.... then one day, the linkage broke, at the shift lever. Not the lever stripping out as is normally the case, but the actually shift assembly shaft that exits the trans case.
It turns out that the shaft was tourqued and twisted and eventually gave up. I also found that the release lever shaft was tourqued, so I replaced it when I put in a new throw out bearing kit.
I am not sure if it was the shift assembly or the release lever but, I find neutral every time now.
I had one of the springs in the ratchet part of the ratchet lid brake causing the mechanism not to function correctly. It took me for every to find that broken 10 cent spring was the problem..
ALL,
Things are much better today. Feel like a dumba$$ but better. She is shifting better have to tweak the clutch just a bit. But the move of the day is......
It wasn't the carb at all it was the gas. I had went on a trip and prior to going I had filled her up the trip was an extended one well you get the point. Emptied the tanks put in fresh fuel and she is running good. Just didn't realize with the corn in fuel now adays it goes south a little quicker then it use to.[sm=headbang.gif]
To all thank you for your help and ideas.[sm=icon_cheers.gif]
To all I think we are there thanks for all the help. Now one more question. Does anyone run the Super B any more? I think mine is about at the end of its life and I am thinking of going to the Super E or G. Just thought I would get some more advise.
If you still want to run the "B", S&S will clean it up, upgrade it and check it out for a nominal price. It's a great carb, and a lot of people still run it, though the "E" is better. The "G" is for the larger "stroker" motors
Thanx Rod just when you feel like a big enough dipsh!t LOL. [sm=roll.gif] Thanks for the posts

Al,
After extracting my cranium from my anus, I think I will run the B for awhile longer she is still working well, knock on wood. And thanx for the info on S&S doing the work for me.
One more lesson learned. When adjusting for the neutral detent do ALL the adjustment from the adjusting bolt. NOT the push rod that runs through the trannie[sm=headbang.gif][sm=icon_flaming.gif][sm=oopssign.gif]
