Default triple tree installation

Hey guys. Here is my latest problem on the rebuild. Last night I mounted my handlebars and soldered all the wiring I cut when I took the bike apart. After that was all done I got out the new chromed headlight nacelle to mount it up. When I hold the nacelle halfs up to the triple trees the mounting holes do not line up. So I get to thinking maybe I didn't assemble the triple trees correctly when the frame came back from powder coating. From the neck on the frame up here is what I have. frame then bearing cup, bearing, dust cover, some sort of fluted net that I assume is to tighten up the bearings, top tree, big regular nut and last a washer with a allen head bolt. Does this sound right to you? Seems like the trees are farther apart then they were before. Any suggestions on where to start?

Thanks,

Larry

That sounds right to me Larry did you replace any of the OEM parts with new?
if so did you compare parts closely.
are the neck races installed solidly to the neck with no paint on the mating surface?

The neck races are in all the way. Didn't replace any of the parts having to do with bearings or any of that.

Could that bearing adjuster nut be in upside down or anything like that?

The tapered side of the first nut faces up to register into top clamp and center top tree. flat side against the bearing.

Which year and style, FX/FXWG/FL/FLadjustable. Got a 781/2 to 83 manual and it sounds like a FL set-up. From steering crown [top tree] up it should be crown, locking washer, nut. Is your last stated item a locking washer with the allen to hold it to the crown, instead of one with a tab?
