Morning Faithful
Have a 79 Shovel trike that runs great. Only problem was exhaust, it exited under the body work of the trike, the noise drove you crazy. Yesterday had a new exhaust installed. Looks great. 2 into 1 and had the installer fab a straight pipe so it exits outside the body work. It is not baffled but the old system was baffled. Coming home I noticed the lack of torque in places I know I could climb without shifting. I'm leaning towards a baffle for back pressure rather than a carb adjustment. S&S E runs great with old exhaust. Any help would be appreciated.
A little back pressure can really help with torque at low to mid RPM.
I'd sure give it a try.
you may also need to adjust the timing {retard a bit}
I wouldn't rule out having to set up the S&S after your finished with the exhaust changes.
were you running 2 into on before the change?
what cam are you using?
Thanks Rodney
The old exhaust was drag pipes with short, baffled, trumpet type mufflers and the babe had tons of torque. Right on the money in the RPM range, never had trouble with the carb. I'll defintely put a baffle in over the weekend.
Thanks again.
that was my issue a few years ago. my lady bought me a set of Samson Long SHots - sounded fantastic but I could not get my S&S Super E adjusted. I called S&S and told them what I have for exhaust - the guy on the other end told me SEVERAL TIMES - "those Samsons look great don't they" - finally I got pissed and said "hell yea - now what do I have to do to your carb to be able to ride?" He laughed at me and said "put baffles in the pipes - just buy one and cut it in half and install it". gotta have back pressure to make em right. I did that and for 7 years I have had zero issues with the carb and pipes...
