regulator?
took the shovel out today for a ride, started right up when i left the house. \\; rode for bout an hour-half or so before i stopped near home for a little gas. \\; filled er up and when i twisted the ol ign. switch.....nothin. \\; dead battery. \\; thankfuly we've got a kiker an the ol shovel started first kik. \\; i decided i better just head home stead of toolin round anymore. \\; got it in the basement on the charger for couple hours and the batts back to life. \\; the fact i ran with a dead batt. after the fillup leads me to think the alts. ok and ive got a dead regulator. \\; comments?
Just use your manual and check out the stator. It is pretty easy. I have had the plug fall out a once. Never again. I doubt that is the issue. Check the wire from the regulator to the battery. The damn things are about 3 feet long and guys just wad them up under the engine. I always trim it to fit and tie it up out of the way. I had a regulator fail a couple of years ago. I know how valuable the kicker is too. \\; \\; Ken
The first test I would do is put a voltmeter across the battery with the motor running if the reading is around 14 volts at a fast idle you are still charging. \\; If not follow the manual and test the alternator. \\; If it is the alternator I would recommend the 22 amp system they used in 82. \\; Harlely still sells it.

Check the simple things first. \\; Battery terminal and ground connections. \\; A loose terminal will keep the battery from charging.
