Hey all , so im in the process of building my first bike and might scoop up a 73 shovel as a donor bike , just wandering if there was anything inherently deviant with that year any far out there gremlins common problems ect with that model ?
73 was the first year for end oiling pinion shaft, change to pump drive gears, first year for timken wheel bearings and hubs, First year for late model handlebar bushings, first year square swingarm, first year short shocks. first year new style tailight, rear fender new and probalby a few more changes I can't remember.
The late 1973 (Jan 1973) oil pumps have a piston type pressure relief valve replacing the ball type reg valve This great info came from HD's service bulletin # 647 Thank you very much!
awesome thanks guys, and i actaully made a bit of a mistake , its not a shovel its actually an ironhead ... long day wasn't thinking, thanks again though ,
ill be replacing just about everything including the stock frame , just pulling the enging/tranny combo and putting it in a rigid ironhead frame its prob the only thing that will be from 73 just about everything else will be new at least in the end anyway ,
If you through that frame away, your title goes with it. And unless your getting that bike for free ($o)You will have way to much in it. You might be farther ahead buying an evo sportster. They are cheap $3000 or less, and run forever And old Ironheads were nothing but trouble. just my .02, good luck
yea planning on keeping the old frame so i can still claim the title haha thinking about making it into a wall ornament , getting it for pretty cheap though and everything on the motor is pretty clean , we'll see tho, im sure ill end up dumping loads of cash into it , but its not my only bike so im not too worried about it, I figure if it turns into a black hole , ill then break down and go the route of the evo .... i just prefer things that i can feasibly work on myself and have heard allot about the evil's of the evo so i figure ill give the Ironhead a shot
