Great info from all. I also have the enclosed set-up and and one time I had contemplated changing it out. You would need to replace the inner and outer primary (as far as I can tell) because of the large openings that are currently covered by the rubber boots.
I had mine off last fall when I changed my rear tire. I have put over 60k on the bike since I bought it. I have no idea how many miles were on it prior. The chain is still in great shape.
I bought a 1981 FLTC about a year ago and it is supposed to have the enclosed chain, but it doesn't. I've been looking (on e-bay, in salvage yards, etc.) for the parts to put the enclosure back on it.
Since I have never seen an enclosed setup, this might be a silly question, but I've been wondering how do you adjust the chain if it is enclosed??
It's as it always was Loosen the rear axil nut turn the rear chain adjusters (left & right ) till the chain has proper tension On the old FLT's there are rubber boots top and bottom that one can feel the chain The boots are located toward the trany Tedd's V- Twin used to carry parts for the old FLT,s I've seen FLT's with 80,000 miles on the orig chain/ sprockets
