Harley had a front belt then switched to a chain which is more costly, why would they do that? Ive been getting conflicting opinions on converting mine to a narrow primary belt suggesting if I ride it aggressively Ill go through belt a year.
does a 3000 hp dragster use a belt? -- when I had my 80" with the L3S cam and other goodies , I ran the snot out of that bike - I had the same belt drive - I went more than a couple of years on a belt - also when the belt brakes it doesn't do the damage a chain does -- I went 1 step more - I added the rear chain tensioner - those 2 combined make a smooth ride..

I was right there with ya till ya mentioned those POS spring loaded "tensioners"... ya see those on any Dragbikes??? I mean ones that Win..
Control is desired... springs???? No thanks.
Only reason anyone around here ever went Belt Primary was Cost... same with going Chain on rear... bunch of COB's...
Or... some of us have a set of cases with the oring groove [primary] broken... hard to seal..
I have found very little difference in Belt vs Chain primary on a Street bike.. And while Sealing the primary has been all the Rage... I have Yet to see any real advantage... including the "crap thru the system" argument... that simply implies we should change oil filters at the scheduled interval!!!
When the 1979 FXS is completed here.. it will be Totally Stock... and I won;t feel a Bit Bad about it...
The last shovel that left here was Stock... and had 60k original miles on it.. just let maintenance be yer Guide..
Edit; just went out to the shop, and only 2 bikes with oil under them..both coincidently have belt Primaries!!

this is another really nice item-- its a inner primary case saver-- we have all seen where the rear chain has rubbed on the inner primary where the starter housing goes -- this keeps the chain from damaging the case -- this in connection with the rear chain tensioner keeps the chain from damaging the case.. comes in white also -- sorry no red
