Need some advice!!! 76 fxe-- just got done going through the heads--new guides, valves, and springs. Fired it up today- started harder than normal, doesn't idle bad but got it out on the highway and it started cutting out real bad--give it some throttle and it comes out of it until rpm's level out and starts cutting out again. Backfires alot on deceleration also. Doesn't have a lot of power either. Running a Keihin carb, blue streak points and condensor, Dyna coil, Accel wires. The only thing I did different than prior to tear down was put an extra insulating block between carb and intake so teardrop air filter (K&N) would clear the gas tank. Any suggestions?
Out the pipes. Set pushrods to HD service manual specs. Put new springs in advance about 1000 miles ago. New o-rings on the intake but I'll check it with carb cleaner.
hey man whats up!
i had kinda the same problem. my old ironhead would cut out and start backfiring through the pipes. i would pull over and let it idle for a minute, and it would go away. but every now and then it would come back.
when i rebuilt the engine i found out that one of the valves was sticking in the guide. did a rebuild and seems that problem went away
when it sputtered, it sounded like a sticky lifter or something, a real loud nock
i hope this helps you out some in your search for an answer!

Intake leak seldom even can cause a blast out the pipe. Sounds like timing. And since you say you replaced the advance springsd, have a look at there. I've seen 'em get a rebuild and then start sticking.
Boy, I feel like an idiot!! Don Hotop's shop is about 5 minutes from home, so I go talk to him, he tells me to change the condensor and guess what--- fires right up, runs great, problem solved!! Never had a condensor act quite like that before--- Thanks for the input though!!! Sure this ain't the last time we will correspond!! LONG LIVE THE SHOVEL!!!!!
