So as mentioned in another post my bike has just started doing a misfire under acceleration when I first start up for a ride, and this is not a constant thing for every ride. I rode 2 days ago just fine, but last night leaving work it re-occured. It seems that for the first 1/8th - 1 1/2 mile the bike is misfiring and popping when the throttle is applied. It sputters like it has bad gas, but it has done this for 2 tanks now. At first I thought it was the ignition system and started with the battery, which is fine. I replaced the plugs and have played with the gap a little bit. I have been allowing ample time to warm up and it seems to happen 2/3 rides now. After the first mile she is fine and runs like a champ. It also happended today leaving school. Rode just fine on the ride there and had absoloutley no issues. Leaving, I had to keep the choke on to keep the revs up even though she ran 13 minutes prior to leaving. It does seem to have a hard time idling with out the choke though. I have cleaned the carb and replaced the air filter. I'm really lost here and the fact its not re-occuring every ride makes me even more lost. It seems like the bike is flooded but that wouldn't make sense? I have no ideas! I don't think its timing because it's not all the time.
Check what size your slow jet is, if its a 42 then replace with a 45 to start with, you might also wanna check your accelerator pump diaphragm, they don't ofetn give trouble but they can.
Fisrt person to tell you to buy a factory manual gets a free slap upside the head ;-)
Sounds to me like you are fouling the plugs during warmup and then it takes a mile or two of running it to clean them off. You mentioned letting it run for 13 minutes, is that how long you let it idle/warmup and is the enricher out all that time?
Since this issue seems to have just started, it's either something you did or it's somethiing going bad/wrong with the engine. Did it start after you did some work on the bike or some other event? If not then I'd look at the intake seals, maybe the carb diaphram and clean the carb again. You can also check the jet as mentioned and going alittle larger is not a bad idea but if nothing else changed I can't see why the carb would all of a sudden need a larger jet.
Reason I mention intake seals is that if one side leaks bad enough the engine will not idle and folks use the enricher to make up for the leak and keep it idling. What that does is foul the plug on the cylinder that's not leaking bad and when you go to take off it misses and barfs until it's burned clean. You can check the seals by spraying a little carb cleaner on them while the engine is running, if the idle changes you have a leak.
Digging up an old thread, maybe it will help somebody in the future. It was indeed fact that my bike was fouling plugs upon warm-up due to having the enricher on my carb on for too long. The battery also contributed to the misfire but very minorly. These where the two main aspects to my problem. Shortly after I did change the jets for a new set of pipes and it was even better
