finally got some pics of the tear down...
yesterday I dropped the frame in a solvent tank and got her all ready for the powdercoater. also welded up a gusset and fixed up a bracket. everything is in suprisingly good shape, and it looks like I am gonna use a lot of the parts over again. anyway, here are some updated pics.
Nice work man I 'm basiclly doin the exact same thing to my 81' fxs. I can't post pics so I'll live through you. It's amazing looking @ the hand done mig welds on the frame everything is so half asssed. I've actually had to go through and fix a few factory welds that they blew out and left. Lots of wire they left on there to and never ground off. Pretty neat working on them though. Are you keeping those pipes? I've heard those short bastards will destroy a shovel.
there was tons of weld splash and all sorts of messy welds. everything else looked pretty good, but it took me about 45 minutes with a grinding bit to get rid of all the ugly stuff left on the frame. amazing how far welding has come from the early 80's!
yeah, I am gonna keep the shorty pipes. can't beat the blue flames at night, and the pissed off look on everyones face at the stop lights. you can run the shorty pipes as long as you don't romp on your old Shovel. I tend to cruise more than race around with it... that is what the 06' is for!
